The Danish Girl
Have the Courage to Love
Do you have the courage to love? This movie directed by Tom Hooper and, has Academy Award - Best Actor winner Eddie Redmayne and Swedish actress Alicia Vikander stared in it, has got to be one of my most anticipated film for 2016!!! This movie is basically around one of the most talked about topic nowadays - LGBT, which in case some of you don't know stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender.
The film is based on the 2000 novel of the same name by David Ebershoff. The story is set against early 20s in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark (I mean obviously it's going to set in Denmark, the movie is called the Danish Girl for crying out loud). An illustrator and artist called Gerda Wegener (started by Alicia Vikander) one day asked her husband, Einar Wegener (started by Eddie Redmayne), to stand in for a female model. With the increasing popularity of the portrait, Gerda painted further pictures of her husband as a woman. During the process, Einar developed a fascination for a female physical appearance and began to live as a woman called Lili Elbe. Ultimately, with the support of Gerda, Einar became the first ever recipient of male to felmale sexual reassignment surgery. However, their marriage become strained when Gerda started to realize that Einar was no longer the person she was married to. As well as that, a childhood friend of Einar, art-dealer Hans Axgil (stared by Matthias Schoenaerts) showed up and started a complex love triangle with the couple.
The first time I saw the trailer I was already like OMG This is amazing!! And I didn't even have the sound on!! I was like what is this?! When I first watched it, I didn't know that Redmayne plays both Einar and Lili. I thought that they were different actors because his acting skill is so damn good!! I have to say he is even more elegant than most women, that's including myself (so female readers don't spit on me lol). I love the expression of Einar when he started to feel something about the female physical appearance, the way he was touching the dress was like he discovered something deep within himself. It was like he had known there was something wrong with himself and suddenly he seems to have some clues on what was wrong with him. It was just so mind blowing!!
Like I said at the start of the post the film is basically revolve around the LGBT topic which has been a big deal nowadays. I admire Einar or Lili's courage as he was so brave in accepting what he wants even though that is people at his era wouldn't accept, he embrace that part of himself bravely. How many of you can say you can do it? What's more admirable is Gerda. I mean how many women can just accept the fact that their husband suddenly come to a realization that I don't want to be a man anymore. But Gerda didn't just accept it, she even supports her husband's decision on doing the surgery, a surgery that no one has done it before. That's truly admirable.
OK I'm gonna stop talking now. I may do a review after I watch the movie next year :)
Just in case some of you still haven't seen the trailer or wondering what's so fascinating about this movie, here's the official trailer.
Enjoy! :)
